Quarter TWO 2025 Selections

2018 Dureuil Janthial Puligny Montrachet Corvee des Vignes 750ml
When we think of great Burgundian vintners, thoughts normally turn towards the Côtes d’Or and all the grand vignerons situated within. But the Côte Chalonnaise is growing in stature; and in Rully, lying just 5 miles south of exalted Chassagne-Montrachet, we find one Vincent Dureuil. Stewart of his family’s vineyards since 1994, Vincent Dureuil of Domaine Dureuil-Janthial has shown great commitment to growing the prestige of Rully and the Côte Chalonnaise in general. Organic farming and terroir-driven wines, along with classic and minimalistic approaches to winemaking, have made him a favorite of Burgundy’s upper echelon, and his wines are gaining quick appreciation here in the United States as well! He does own small parcels in the Côtes d’Or, one of which being his Puligny-Montrachet parcel, .39 hectares of very old vines planted between 1956 and 1958. Corvée des Vignes lies on the ‘Meursault’ side of Puligny and is vinified like a Premier Cru Meursault rather than village Puligny. Vincent uses very little new oak here in the 2018 vintage, a mere 20%, with only indigenous yeasts used during fermentation, no fining or filtering. Decanting is urged thus to filter out any sediment, but this wine has an outstanding bouquet; think lavender, pear, and citrus confit with secondary and tertiary notes of acacia and rose petals. Medium-bodied on the palate with terrific length and rich, voluminous citrus and pear flavors, the finish is very clean and saline with its minerality and grace. Seared scallops, sole meunière, lobster, veal with mushrooms, or a goat cheese or aged Roquefort would pair wonderfully with this graceful white Burgundy.

2013 Genot-Boulanger Pommard Clos Blanc 750ml
Guillaume and Aude Lavollée are fourth generation winemakers at Domaine Génot-Boulanger, one of only a handful of family-owned domaines in Burgundy to produce wines in all three Burgundy côtes (Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Côtes de Nuits) and possess 22 hectares under vine. They have worked tirelessly since 2008 to convert to organic farming practices, experimenting with biodynamics. They are making some of the finest, most terroir-expressive wines in Burgundy today! Their Premier Cru vineyard in Pommard is Clos Blanc, situated in a choice location next to Les Grands Epenots. The vineyard is called Clos Blanc due to the large concentration of clay and limestone on the topsoil, so thick and apparent that the soil looks white. The .33 hectare parcel was planted in 1966. The Lavollée family and winemaker François Delaby, architect of the 2013 vintage, were very sparing with new wood here, and the wine shows its excellent pedigree on the palate! Very Pommard in fragrance, with dark berry and earth aromatics and a brooding hint of plum and tobacco taking center stage. Still vibrant red and blue fruit flavors embrace the wine’s fresh minerality and lovely, round tannins. This wine exudes its superior quality! Ideally matched with a strong, mature cheese like a Comté or Epoisses, it can also be enjoyed with lamb or barbecue easily!

Lewelling Wight Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 750ml
The Lewelling Estate is one of Napa's oldest and finest, founded in 1864 by pioneer winegrower John Lewelling in the western foothills of Saint-Helena. His great-granddaughter Janice Lewelling Wight inherited the property in 1950, and she, along with her husband Russ Wight, replanted the vineyards and took over the operations of the old family winery. As their three sons currently farm the 28-acre Lewelling Estate Vineyards, this is one of the oldest continually family owned and farmed properties in Napa Valley. Lewelling's grapes were sold to several Napa wineries for years; it was only in 1992 that they began bottling their own wines, which include a cuvée called Wight Vineyard made from the best lots of their estate each year. The gravelly loam soils of the property impart a solid mineral core to these wines. They are always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, unfined and unfiltered, aged in French oak. 2021 was an excellent vintage in Napa, and the Wight Vineyard produced a blockbuster expression of Cabernet! Blackberry, chocolate, incense, and plum notes emanate from the bouquet; the full-bodied palate boasts velvety, seamless tannins and a long, enveloping finish. A delicious wine to be enjoyed with red meats, mushroom-based fare, even chocolate desserts!
