Last year, Wine Workshop held a tasting of Piedmont wines from the ‘70s and ‘80s. One of the standouts of the night, against some stiff competition from the likes of Bruno Giacosa, Bartolo Mascarello, and Cappellano, were the wines of Filippo Sobrero. There is not much information on this rare producer, except that Sobrero owned part of the famous Monprivato vineyard and sold his parcel to Mauro Mascarello, who made his own highly prized Monprivato. Over the next few years, legend has it that Mascarello made a rare, super cuvée using grapes from the Sobrero vineyards and called it Cà d’Morissio. The Sobrero wines are archetypal Barolos of incredible complexity and elegance. We were so excited to find a rare vertical and we thought it would be fun to add in a few Monprivato’s and Cà d’Morissio’s for comparison. If you are a hardcore Barolophile you will not want to miss this ultra rare dinner.
